Butler Lake Bridge Delayed
Village officials had originally set Tuesday, August 19 as the target date to reopen Lake Street, one day prior to the start of classes at LHS.

Actual soil conditions at the site proved to be different from what had been expected based on soil borings taken adjacent to the old bridge during the planning phase of the project. The weaker soils encountered meant the original foundation design needed to be revised. A new foundation design using steel pilings was developed, and a specialized subcontractor was brought in to install the pilings While several pilings achieved the necessary bearing capacity at depths of 28-30 feet, other pilings had to be driven in excess of 60 feet. Six additional pilings were required and piling installation was completed last week. The additional foundation work has increased the cost of the bridge replacement by approximately $150,000.

In conjunction with the bridge replacement, the Village is also reconstructing the Lake Street pavement between West Street and Stonegate Road under a separate contract. Work on Lake Street east of the bridge started in mid-May and was completed in July. The road contractor has constructed most of the new curb and gutter west of the bridge and the remaining roadway will be installed when the bridge is completed. The Village estimates that the Lake Street bridge and roadway will be completed in mid-September.

Update on Delayed Metra Quiet Zone
May 21,2008-The Village has directed its consulting engineer to re-file a quiet zone application for the Milwaukee District North line railroad, including crossings in the villages of Libertyville and Grayslake. A previously approved quiet zone for this section of railroad was abruptly terminated just prior to implementation in December 2007 due to Metra’s concern with the lack of certain equipment at the St. Mary’s Road crossing. Unfortunately, that crossing will not be able to be included in re-filing the quiet zone application. However, the Village is currently working with Congressman Mark Kirk’s office in an attempt to obtain funding for the Constant Warning Time (CWT) equipment which costs approximately $250,000 - $300,000. The Village anticipates the St. Mary’s Road will be included in the quiet zone at a later date when the CWT equipment is installed.
